Is India Truly Friendless? Why Does No One Stand with India in Times of Need?
India is the world’s largest democracy, a rapidly growing economy, and a rising power in global geopolitics. Yet, during crises, India often appears to stand alone without reliable allies. Why is India perceived as friendless?
-
Over-dependence on self-reliance: India’s historical policy of non-alignment prevented it from building long-term alliances.
-
Dual diplomacy: Maintaining close ties with both the US and Russia creates trust issues for many nations.
-
Troubled neighborhood: Almost every neighbor – Pakistan, China, Nepal, Sri Lanka – has disputes with India.
-
Transactional relationships: Many countries trade with India, but hesitate to stand by it during conflicts.
-
Nationalist approach: India often projects “we can handle it alone,” which reduces the need for allies.
👉 Thus, India may be strong strategically, but it has not been able to build dependable friendships in the international arena.
The real question is – should India change its foreign policy to build true allies, or is standing alone its greatest strength?
